How this is worked out
- The interval comes from AS/NZS 3760:2022 Table 2.4 for the environment you pick; the 3-month construction-site interval comes from AS/NZS 3012.
- Table 2.4 intervals are maximums. A documented risk assessment under cl. 2.2, or a state WHS regulator, can require a shorter interval — never a longer one.
- The due date is the test date plus the interval, clamped to the last day of the month when the day does not exist (31 Aug + 6 months = 28 Feb).
- Event-driven checks — before hire, after repair (AS/NZS 5762) — are not intervals and are not included.
Common questions
Is the date on the tag the due date or the test date?+
Both usually appear. AS/NZS 3760 requires the test date and the retest date (or interval) on the tag; showing the next due date is common practice so anyone can see at a glance whether the item is in date.
Which environment applies to an office?+
Equipment that stays put and whose cord is not flexed in use — a desktop PC or a printer — sits in the 5-year protected-environment row. A kettle, a phone charger or a vacuum that is moved and plugged in and out is 'cord flexed in use' and falls under 12 months.
Can I test less often than Table 2.4 says?+
No. The table gives maximum intervals. A risk assessment can shorten an interval; it cannot extend one.
Does this apply on construction sites?+
Construction and demolition sites use AS/NZS 3012 instead, which sets a 3-month interval for portable equipment. The tool lists it as its own option.
