How this is worked out

  • Installation verification: AS/NZS 3000:2018 cl 8.3.10 sets 300 ms at rated residual current, tested on both the 0° and 180° half-cycles.
  • For a 10 mA (Type I) device the tighter 40 ms figure from AS/NZS 3760:2022 Table 2.3 applies — its cl 2.4.3.4 note permits using that table for AS/NZS 3000 verification.
  • In-service test & tag: AS/NZS 3760 Table 2.3 publishes 40 ms for 10 mA and 300 ms for 30 mA. For other ratings it publishes no limit; a trip at IΔn confirms operation and the time is recorded.
  • The tool covers the ×1 (rated current) test only. Push-button and ×½ no-trip checks are recorded separately.

Common questions

Is the limit the same for Type A and Type AC RCDs?+

Yes. The trip-time limit depends on the rated residual current, not the type marking. The type is confirmed by inspection of the device marking; note that Type AC RCDs must not be installed in new work.

My meter shows two trip times — which one counts?+

Both. Meters test at 0° and 180° and each result must be within the limit.

What about the ×5 test?+

The ×5 test is not encoded in this lookup. Record the ×5 result as your meter reports it.
